April 7, 1946 - March 8, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Merrill Martin Lynch, age 71, on March 8, 2018. Born in Laurel, he was the son of the late Martin and Evelyn Conaway Lynch of Laurel. Merrill graduated from Laurel High School in 1964, where he enjoyed playing baseball for Ollie Shields and football for George Schollenberger. Immediately upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served in Vietnam as part of the 1st and 3rd Marine divisions. Upon his return from Vietnam he was hired by Delmarva Power and retired after 39 years of service. Following retirement, he worked as a starter at the Heritage Shores Club, where he thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of people who shared his passion for golf. Merrill was an avid sports fan and loved coaching Pop Warner football and Laurel Little League baseball for many years. When not coaching he enjoyed playing softball, bowling and his favorite pastime -- golf. He was a member of the Laurel Lions Club, VFW and American Legion. Eating was perhaps his second favorite activity, as he never missed an opportunity to dine out with his darlin Ellen. Merrill will always be known for his infectious smile, sense of humor and his enjoyment of life. Merrill will be fondly remembered by his loving wife of 50 years, Ellen Boyce Lynch of Laurel; his sons, Jeff Lynch of Wilmington and Kile Lynch of Laurel; his brother, Wayne (Joy) Lynch of Lynchburg, SC; his sister, Karen Chamblee of Seaford; his sister-in-law, Geraldine Taylor of Laurel; nephew Kevin (Kathy) Taylor of Coventry, CT; niece Julie Taylor Lunn and her daughters Sydney and Nikki, and Nikki’s son Adam of Frederick, MD. He also leaves his beloved pets Kayla and Chloe. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 23, at 1 p.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. A celebration of Merrill’s life will be held Saturday, April 7, at 5 p.m. at Heritage Shores Club, 1 Heritage Shores Circle, Bridgeville. This would have been Merrill’s 72nd birthday. Donations may be made to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home Laurel, DE.
