Janet Hurley Messick, 92, of Seaford and formerly of Laurel passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Manor House in Seaford. Janet was born in Vienna, MD on April 9, 1925 to the late Goldsborough and Mary Bradley Hurley. She resided in Vienna until her high school graduation and then moved to Seaford to work at the DuPont Nylon Plant during WWII. In 1948, she married the late T. Coleman Messick of Laurel. They were happily married for 50 years, Janet had worked in the Laurel school system food service and ended her career as the manager of the Laurel High School cafeteria. Although she worked outside the home, she considered her main responsibility in life to be the caring of her husband and nurturing their 2 children. She worked hard to prepare the children to be fine upstanding adults. Her success is reflected in the caring and successful people they have become. After her husband passed away in 1998, she was very active in several groups in the community including 15 years of volunteer work at the Good Samaritan Shop averaging 20 hours per week in support of her church Centenary United Methodist Church of Laurel. Mrs. Messick is survived by her children, Pamela M. Kaplan & husband Robert Kaplan and Sandra E. Messick & husband Steven M. Hubschmitt; her grandchildren – Jared Kaplan, Asher Kaplan & Justin Hubschmitt. Her siblings Lois Lord, Emerson, Goldsborough & Carroll Hurley predeceased her. Funeral Services will be held at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West St. Laurel, DE 19956 on Weds. March 28, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Pastor Dean Perdue will officiate. A viewing will be 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel. Memorial donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Shop 115 West Market Street Laurel, DE 19956.
