Learn our story, from the beginning and into the future.
Our proud heritage of providing professional and compassionate funeral care for Delmarva families has been a Laurel area staple since 1939. Through four generations of family ownership, Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home has continued to give each family the attention and care they deserve during their time of need. We invite you to browse our site so that you more clearly see how our first-class facilities, staff and services can assist you.
In 1939, Mr. Granville Windsor and his wife Ella, both licensed funeral directors, founded the firm. We are currently celebrating our 71th year of service. We are also very proud of our family’s continuity of ownership. After all, we are the fourth generation to serve families in the Laurel area. Through its long history, the owners and staff members of Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home have never strayed from the underlying integrity and principles the company was founded upon all those years ago.
Until his death in 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Windsor owned and operated the Windsor Funeral Home on West St in Laurel, DE. After Mr. Windsor passed away, his son-in-law, Homer Disharoon, took over the day-to-day operation of the funeral home.
Homer, the husband of Verna Windsor Disharoon, had returned from serving his country as a pilot in the United States Air Corps, and faithfully managed the Funeral Home until he retired in 1989.
A close friend of the family, William M. Short, purchased the business in 1989. He was a second generation funeral director, and the sale made it possible for the two families to combine their generations of experience. It was at this time our name was changed to the Short-Windsor-Disharoon Funeral Home. The Short family operated the firm until the passing of William M. Short in 2002.
At that time, his wife Sarah Short became the owner/operator of the firm. Three years later, in 2005, she decided to retire and sold the funeral home in Laurel to their oldest daughter, Holly Short Hannigan. Today, Holly and her husband Edward are proud to carry on the legacy of what is now known as the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, Inc.
Our name really says it all, as it reflects both the changes of ownership, and the continuity of dedicated service by our respective families. Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home has always been a family business, steeped in a long tradition of excellence in service. Our rich heritage reflects the values and vision of four respected families, equally well known for their commitment to excellence and the community.
We’re pleased to say that after seven decades, Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home has become a time-honored tradition for families in the Delmarva area. It’s a comfort for them to know that when they need us, we are here, and will continue to be so far into the future.
